Peru is one of the world’s most diverse countries – both biologically and culturally. It encompasses a long stretch of the Andes mountains as well as vast Amazonian jungle, Pacific coast, arid and desert zones, the world’s highest navigable lake and the largest one in South America, and dozens of snow-capped peaks ranging over 5000 meters elevation. It is crisscrossed by dozens of large rivers which provide amazing diversity within their valleys. Peru’s biological affinity is mostly allied with southern South America, and it hosts 12 endemic bird areas as well as 45 national parks and nature reserves. With more than 1800 species of birds, the amazing country of Peru is home to one fifth of the world’s bird species. It boasts some 101 endemic and innumerable rare bird species. One of the world’s largest parks, Manu National Park, covers more than a million and a half hectares of land and has the highest number of bird species recorded in one protected area.

Peru is also home to the ancient and remarkable Inca culture and some of the world’s most reknowned archaeological sites including Cusco, Machu Picchu, Nazca Lines, and many many more.

“BIRDING NORTHERN PERU:
INCREDIBLE ENDEMICS AND  SUPERB SPECIALTIES”

Tour 11-25 October 2009, Extension 26-30 October 2009

Northern Peru is a vast area with scrub forests, riverine gallery forests, higher elevation cloud forest and páramo, amazing canyons and massive mountains, all eventually sloping down to the Amazon basin.  Our tour departs from Lima, with a short flight to Chiclayo.  Over the next two weeks we bird all the northern lowland zone, overnighting at several new birding lodges as well as at local hotels. The scenery is beautiful, the hospitality and birding are excellent.  This tour covers dry forest Tumbesian as well as Maranon Valley biogeographic zones and higher elevation zones at Abra Patricia and Pomacochas.  For even more birding you can add 5 more days to visit the higher elevation sites around Cajamarca.

I.    The Northern Peru Tour includes the zone of Olmos, Chiclayo, Jaen,
Bagua Grande, Pomacochas, Florida, Abra Patricia, Moyobamba, Tarapoto (15 days total)

II.   The Cajamarca Higher Elevation Extension includes Cajamarca, Batan
Grande, Celendin, Leimebamba, Pomacochas (+5 days)
